Famous for its theater, the Temple of Apollo and its ancient ruins, Delphi was considered the navel of the world and played a very important role in the classical Greek world. We will visit the archaeological site and the Temple of Apollo, famous for its oracle. In the afternoon, we leave for Kalabaka, crossing the Thessaly plain in central Greece through the towns of Lamia (short stop) and Trikala. Kalabaka is a small town built at the foot of the majestic gray rocks of Meteora, just below the Monasteries (short stop for souvenirs). Overnight in Kalabaka.
Morning departure for Meteora, on a cliff-monastery excursion, visiting two different Byzantine monasteries, built on rock towers and offering fantastic views of the plain. Meteora is included in the list of UNESCO’s world heritage monuments. The monasteries sit atop sandstone towers, which provided monks with completely inaccessible retreats for centuries. Meteora is considered one of the most beautiful areas of the Greek mainland and its group of monasteries is one of the country’s most unique attractions. On our way back from the monasteries, there is an optional visit to a Byzantine-style icon factory. We return to Athens passing by the heroic monument of Leonidas, the king of Sparta at Thermopylae (short stop for photos). Return to Athens late in the afternoon and overnight.
