Chania Old Town walking city tour – The world’s oldest olive tree at Vouves, the Olive Museum & Olive tour at the Cretan Mill.
Today our exploration starts with a visit to the oldest olive tree ever, the Vouves olive tree and the Olive Tree Museum. The tree is one of the oldest olive trees in the world, which still produces olives today. The exact age of the tree cannot be determined precisely, but the scientists from the University of Crete have estimated it to be over 3,000 years old. The trunk has a perimeter of 12.5 m (41 ft) and a diameter of 4.6 m (15 ft). The Olive Tree Museum of Vouves was inaugurated in a nearby 19th-century house, displaying the traditional tools and process of olive cultivation, all the elements that where part of the everyday life in Crete until the middle of the last century (the 50’s). We continue our visit to a local Cretan Mill, one of the best olive extractions. The Mill specializes in estate produced stone-milled and cold-pressed organic olive oil. The Mill’s stone was built specifically to welcome tourists and to hold presentations and olive oil tasting, introducing, and educating visitors to eco sensitive ways of producing quality olive oil. Then relax in, having a coffee and learning about the Cretan olive oil and enjoying the magnificent view of Rokka rock. A huge rock on top of a slope facing the North coast, with remnants of a Byzantine castle built on ruins dating back to Roman and Minoan times. Stroll through Chania’s irresistible Old Town, immersing yourself in Crete’s history and browsing the shops around the harbor. After a brief drive, you’ll arrive at Crete’s former capital of Chania, and enter its Old Town, which thrived around a Venetian port. You will admire the incredible flower-decorated neighborhoods, learn about Cretan history, mythology, and traditions. Join us on a unique tour through the ages and explore the other side of the city. You will visit the old societies of Topanas, Splantzia, Kolombo and Kasteli hills to admire the panoramic view of the harbor, traditional Cretan shops, and magnificent buildings. Because many civilizations have conquered and occupied Crete over the centuries, you’ll observe myriad architectural styles among the Venetian buildings, Turkish fountains, churches, mosques, and synagogues in the Jewish Quarter. Explore Market Hall, a shopping venue containing elaborate stalls overflowing with an abundance of merchandise that was built in 1913 in the shape of a cross to celebrate Crete’s reunification with Greece. You’ll end the guided portion of your tour in the harbor area and enjoy ample time to browse the galleries, tavernas and shops, where you may watch tradesmen at work. You will also visit the ancient ruins of the great Minoan Kydonia and the Byzantine-Venetian moats’ high walls. The most important thing that you will learn from this experience is that in two hours you will tour and learn about five old civilizations, see their architecture, know about their culture, and hear the ancient spirits’ history and tales!
