“Sporades” in Greek means “those scattered” (compare with “sporadic”). From Classical Antiquity the name has referred to the Aegean Island groups outside the central archipelago of the Cyclades.
Skopelos island, enjoyed international acclaim when Hollywood producers chose it to shoot the famous movie “Mamma Mia!”, establishing it as a holiday destination for travellers coming from around the world. Crystal clear waters next to golden coasts; traditional architecture; rugged natural landscapes and pure island atmosphere are what Skopelos adds to. As the island’s land is mostly covered by a pine forest, the colour green will cast a spell over you. It is part of the Sporades Island group, and it has three ports: Skopelos, Agnontas and Glossa. Its ancient Greek name was Peparithos, son of Dionysus and Ariadne, who is believed to have been the island’s first inhabitant, while its name today was given in Ptolemaios texts in the 2nd c. AD. Skopelos’ strongest card is its jaw dropping beaches with pine trees touching its turquoise waters as well as its fascinating local cuisine.
Skiathos island, the most cosmopolitan island in the Northern Sporades, is truly a paradise on earth, with lush pine forests and crystal-clear azure waters. The island is picturesque, unspoilt, and blessed with more than 60 beautifully crystal-clear waters and beaches. The most famous is Koukounaries, which is considered as the third most beautiful beach in the Mediterranean. When you add in its bustling nightlife, it is only natural that the island attracts thousands of young visitors every year!
Alonissos island, is an island ideal for those who want to unwind and enjoy leisure walks surrounded by pine forests, olive groves and orchards. Blessed with rugged natural landscapes, and surrounded by small islands scattered around the archipelagos, Alonnisos is the most remote of the Northern Sporades Island group.
